On descriptive use of tags. December 23, 2006

Quickly, I think of making a small post. A post of a passing thought, without a description of that thought. The post intself would only contain the thought, and it would read almost like a quote.
Something like, “I looked over and spotted a deer standing alert; staring at me from beside a house.” Now that would be the entire content of the post. I would then proceed to add a great quantity of tags in order to properly classify the thought and put it into perspective.
Tags like, “Brittany, deer, walking, outside, way home, Tim Hortons, afternoon, winter, coffee, excited, peaceful, mp3 player, headphones, glance, look, wildlife, rural, homes, humans, nature, I was feeling smart, thoughts, appreciation, moment, hunting, movie, thinking, I could shoot, lots of ideas crossing my mind, pet, tame, call over, embarrassed, cold, cars passing, me standing, deer across the road, simple sights, I had an idea, I could film, video, If I had a camera, distance, possibility, minor importance, contrast two kinds of shooting, kill vs. learn, fear vs. wonder, wait, leave, walk home, in retrospect, example, thought process, catergorization of memories, reference” But it could be even longer than that, and more encompassing…. linking to related concepts, thoughts, and descriptions.
Now, this would serve to isolate the thought/idea, and allow for an interesting method of observation and interpretation through my choice of classification. I could take it a step further if I had done the same thing with other thoughts and ideas already, and tag the ideas with ideas that I mentally link to this one. Creating a kind of synthetic chain of thought to observe for myself. Of course, I do not even have to use real ideas and tags, which could be really interesting if I were to try and create a non-linear story through the use of tagging in detail thoughts and ideas.
I think of this because it is somewhat of a reversal of what goes on. Normally the post is a fairly detailed exploration of something, and the tags serve as brief descriptive words to classify and catergorize what was said so that it is easily accessable.
In the new case, the tags are what really breathe life into the otherwise trivial bits and pieces. Allowing a storyline with the tags as guides, leaving lots of room for thought, study, and interpretation.
